Landing Page: Destination Page. The web page searchers arrive at after clicking on an ad. PPC
ad advertisers display a URL (specifying the exact page URL in the code) on which searchers will land after
clicking on ads in the SERP. Also known as the location for closing a deal as here is where actions that determine
an advertiser’s conversion rate of success occur.
Latent Semantic Indexing: LSI uses word associations to assist search engines’ understanding of
what a page is about with greater accuracy.
Lead Generation: Symbiotic relationship between websites where a visit to one generates
interest and therefore leads to the products and services of another. The lead generation site doesn’t permit the
visitor to make a purchase but will provide a contact form for completion that will return further information on
products and/or services from the other company. Submitted contact forms are considered as leads. They contain
personal information about visitors who have some level of interest in the product or service offered.
Link Cardinality: See “Link Popularity.”
Link Farming: Manipulation of link popularity figures by attempts to substantially and
artificially increase them.
Link Popularity: The total number of links (internal or external) accrued that point to
particular URLs. Internal link popularity refers to the numbers of links or pages within a web site linking to
specific URLs. External link popularity refers to the numbers of inbound links from external web sites that point
to a specific URL. Having more “links” than competitors, gives link cardinality or link superiority.
Linkbait: Providing ‘bait’ on you site as an attractive association whereby people will notice
and link to it. By linking with you, other sites are giving approval and showing their perceived value of the
content your site contains would also be of interest to others.
Linking Profile: A profile is a representation of the extent to which something exhibits
various characteristics. A linking profile, therefore, is the result of analyzing your link sources.
Log File: All server software stores information about web site incoming and outgoing
activities. Web log files function similarly to the “black box”, which records all the data during a plane flight.
Usually in the root directory, the log file may also be found in a secondary folder. Without
permission/authorization to access these files, you will need help from the server administrator.
Log File Analysis: The analysis of records stored in the log file. In its raw format, the
abundance of data in the log files can be overwhelming and hard to read for ordinary users. However, numerous log
file analyzers are able convert log file data into user-friendly charts and graphs and a good analyzer should be
considered an essential SEO tool, being able to show statistics like visits by search engine spiders, keywords each
visitor used to find the site or number of visitors received from each search engine etc.
Long Tail: Keyword phrases with more than two words. They are highly specific and so, draw
lower traffic compared to shorter, more competitive keyword phrases, which is also why they are cheaper. Despite
the lower traffic they return, long tail keywords, have good conversion ratios of click-throughs that they
generate.
Long-Tailed Keywords: Keyword phrases with at least 2 or 3 words in them.
